I'd add: Clip your horse's neck & shoulders during shedding season or
every time you wipe your running nose you'll apply another layer of hair.
After the first few miles you won't have a glove, shirt tail, not even
the inside of your shirt that's got a clean place you can use to try to
get the hair off your tongue. :-P

    Not to discourage anyone but it's been my experience that the sun 
only comes out the day AFTER the ride.  That said, here are some 
tips:
    1.  Always pack all the raingear you own, even if the prediction 
is for the best weather in 100 years.
    2.  Always carry some kind of raingear during the ride.
    3.  If per some miracle the sun comes out half way through a 
rain ride, DO NOT leave your raingear at the hold.  Carry it with 
you because 1/2 way through the last loop the temp will drop 20 
degrees, the wind will blow & it will rain and hail on you.  
    4.  Practice trotting in the mud, a nice steady 6.5 - 7 mph.  
You and your horse may well end up doing 50 miles in 6 inches of 
sucking mud so you might as well be ready.
    5.  Practice wiping mud off your face at a trot or keep a 20 ft 
distance between you and the horse in front.
    6.  Expect to have everything you own covered with mud & have a 
plan for getting it off before it turns to cement.
    7.  Spray your horses tail with a silicone coat product - this 
cuts down on the mud dreadlocks in the tail. 
    8.  Smile, it's an endurance ride.
