[RC] singlefooting - Kristy Watson

I have two single footing Standardbreds. They will sometimes pace, but most
of the time they single foot if I get them on the bit and squeeze with my
legs and I love it! They even get to know that that is what you want from
them when you ride. When I have a friend ride one of these (ex race horses
that were too slow for the track) they will usually trot because the person
riding doesn't know how to ask for the smooth gait. I just can't say enough
about the single footing. It is like riding on air. They can do it slow and
fast. I don't notice much head shaking at all (unlike my walker). Mostly,
they keep their heads up a little, ears pointed out with alertness like they
are loving it and they just cruise. Now, I have to admit, I ride on the road
in my subdivision with my Ground Control Horseshoes, so I really can cruise!
I can still get them to go on the side of the road, but at that speed, I
have to be careful of any holes or rocks that might be lurking. My dad has
raised probably 60 standardbreds when I was growing up and out of those,
only a very few of them could do this unique gait. There is a single footing
horse organization on the internet. http://www.singlefootinghorse.com I
haven't registered mine, but I have been thinking about it.
