[RC] Peanut Hulls - Patti Kuvik

some of these old horse traders in my area make their own horse feed and
use peanut hulls in their >mix. anyone heard of this? is there any
nutritional value available to horses from peanut hulls? >cowboy ed

Dairy One has analysis of 19 samples (but not every sample had every test
done).

Go to the main library and look in "Energy Feeds, dry" for Peanut Hulls.
Averages:
Crude protein 11.5%, crude fiber 27.8%, low sugar/starch (NSC 3.2%).
2g calcium per pound, Ca:P close to 2:1. Low calories (they only tested for
cows, not horses).
More trace minerals than many hays, (but also shows high iron - very likely
that a sample was contaminated with dirt and skewed the averages).
Could be a good protein and fiber source when you want to keep calories
down, looks somewhat comparable to soybean hulls that are used extensively
in commercial feeds - but I'd want to check lysine and methionine to get an
idea of the protein quality.
