[RC] Peanut Hulls - Patti Kuviksome of these old horse traders in my area make their own horse feed and use peanut hulls in their >mix. anyone heard of this? is there any nutritional value available to horses from peanut hulls? >cowboy ed Dairy One has analysis of 19 samples (but not every sample had every test done). http://www.dairyone.com/Forage/FeedComp/disclaimer.asp Go to the main library and look in "Energy Feeds, dry" for Peanut Hulls. Averages: Crude protein 11.5%, crude fiber 27.8%, low sugar/starch (NSC 3.2%). 2g calcium per pound, Ca:P close to 2:1. Low calories (they only tested for cows, not horses). More trace minerals than many hays, (but also shows high iron - very likely that a sample was contaminated with dirt and skewed the averages). Could be a good protein and fiber source when you want to keep calories down, looks somewhat comparable to soybean hulls that are used extensively in commercial feeds - but I'd want to check lysine and methionine to get an idea of the protein quality.
