[RC] Purina?? - Adrienne YoungbloodHi there... Just another lurker brought out to speak about Ultium. I switched from Purina's Equine Jr, and Complete Advantage to Ultium for my Morgan filly and mare. Consequently over time they both became VERY aggressive and gained weight. The filly became a real P.I.T.A. I cut back on how much I was feeding...as the directed amount to feed is MUCH less than most prepared feeds, but I didn't BELIEVE the feeding instructions ;) (and that may be why it's more expensive - you're supposed to use less). After getting the amount under control...I still feel the sugars in the Ultium had a hyper effect on them and their weight. I used to use a VERY similar "concoction" of pellets, beet pulp, selenium, vit E, vitamins. Ground flax seed, Kelp..etc.. I had only switched to these prepared feeds for the sake of ease. They are now back to grass hay and the "concoction" and are MUCH nicer :) . I think the control you get with making your own, is really invaluable. Adrienne Speaking of feeds, I am in the process of changing feeds. If anyone has feedback on the following, please do. My feedstore has become unreliable,so I am changing stores and hence have to change feeds. The new store is a Purina store. I guess they are all either Purina or Darigold, along with MAYBE some local feeds. So, I used to feed an 11% protein, alfalfa based local feed with minimal sugar. I only feed 1-2 lbs a day mixed in with lots of wet beet pulp and vitamins and a Selenium and Vitamin E suppliment. The feed is more a device to encourage them to eat everything else. I looked at two Purina feeds today: >Ultium and Strategy AX. >The Ultium was twice as expensive as the Strategy. The store clerk did not know why, and the printed materials did not help. The only real difference (aside from price) that I could tell was that Ultium has a lot of sugar and also has beet pulp. I can add my own beet pulp. I decided to "try" the Strategy.
