Re: [RC] Professional's choice boots - Chris PausMy mentor who is classically dressage trained, taught me to look at it like this: The way to build tendon and ligament strength is to use the legs enough to stress, but not so much as to do damage. If those body parts are overly protected, they are not going to gain the strength they need. It's why so many show horses go lame after being in a stall 23/7 and taken out one hour a day to be worked in a deep sand arena.
I don't protect my horse's legs out in the pasture. They run and jump and do airs above the ground without any protection. When I ride, they wear shoes or easyboots if necessary, but otherwise, no leg protection. I want those tendons and ligaments to be strong to stand up to the sport.
If I wore support hose every day, my own legs would not get strong because they are being artifically supported.
Maybe I'm all wrong in my thinking, but I just try to keep things as simple as possible.
I did use SMBs once after my horse was recovering from a sprain (he did it in the pasture).; When we got back to camp, I decided not to use them again. There was so much mud and grit packed inside the boots, it must have been like having sandpaper rub against his legs!
