I read your posts all the time – many are very
informative and others are just fun!
I’ve only done one competitive trail ride – had a
blast but just don’t have the horse for the sport. Maybe some day.
I’m hoping that some of you that have had to deal with
stifle injuries will be able to give me some better insight on what to expect.
Daughter’s horse pulled up lame last fall, had
injection blocks and x-rays. Before proceeding up to the stifle the vet
recommended that he could be stalled rested and time off and he may come
around. He was stall rested for 30+ days with daily walks and then turned
out alone for another month. After that he was turned out to pasture with
his buddies for the winter. The horse has not been ridden since last
October. He seemed completely fine and my daughter started to ride him 2
weeks ago. Long slow walks. Two days went very well, 3rd
day didn’t. He spooked at a deer – reared and spun around to
his left. Came up lame again. Vet did injection block in to the
stifle and x-rays. X-rays are clean and the horse is on stall rest
again. They want to proceed with some kind of steroid injection in to the
stifle to see if that shows any improvement. If so, a series of
injections will occur. If not they are recommending that I take him to MichiganState for surgery. Feel that he
may have a tear.
Does anyone have experience with this that can offer any
advice. If he does have the surgery how long should I leave him
off? Any type of recommended physical therapy program?
Thanks for any responses – much appreciated.
Wendy
