As a member of the California State Trails
Committee, one of the issues we are looking at is the
reconstruction/relocation of the Cuyamaca Horse Camps, Los Vaqueros and Los
Caballos...in San Diego County
Since the fires of 2002 Native American burial
sites have been found in the camp areas.
There is FEMA money available for
reconstruction...but now relocation seems to be a consideration as
well.
The Agencies that will be addressing the
issues are REQUIRED by law to have public hearings before a plan is
adopted/implemented. All interested trail users should weigh in on this
very important process....I am thinking specifically of Ramona Trails Assoc. and
Descanso Trails People....but all comments are extremely valuable.
Notices of meetings are usually published in local
newspapers....but feel free to contact State Parks Planning www.parks.ca.gov and request
notification of these meetings/hearings, and/or the procedure for "written
comments". Ask for the "public comment period" dates...otherwise, your
comments don't have to be considered.
Cuyamaca offers some of the best riding and horse
camping in the state of California...please participate.... please pass this
along to riders that are not on ridecamp.
