OK, I scanned the AERC rulebook and did not see any rules barring riding
  without a saddle.

I have a friend who is an awesome rider and rides mostly bareback.   She
is  very interested in doing her first LD in a couple of months (to make
sure  her  horse is ready -- probably already is though).

So, can you ride without a saddle and barefoot at an AERC sanctioned
ride?

Indeed one can, and various people have done so over the years.  I can
think of two here in the NW who rode many miles bareback, and there have
been others that have done an occasional ride that way.  I can remember
one fellow coming up to weigh for BC, holding just his halter rope.  <g>

A specific ride could have an additional rule that requires a saddle, but
AERC does not go there.
