Re: [RC] Beet Pulp DO NOT FEED DRY - Maggie MieskeI am sure Susan can respond to this better than I can but I feed dry SHREDDED beet pulp all the time. Only cases I have ever had of choke were with horses bolting feed, whether it had beet pulp in it or not. The pelleted beet pulp we get around here is HUGE and I won't feed that dry but I have no trouble with the shredded stuff. I believe Susan will tell you that dry beet pulp does not soak up all the moisture in the gut and cause colic....I have NEVER had a horse colic from dry beet pulp, even when they got into a bag of it and ate most of it dry. Beet pulp is fiber and is great for HOLDING moisture in the hind gut. Just before a ride (and at vet checks) I feed lots of soaked bp for just that purpose. I've only been at this since 1998 so still consider myself a newbie but I have been feeding beet pulp (SHREDDED only) since that same year, many rat studies (not just one rat studies) and have had no problems.
