[RC] Sandy Hills - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Rene' Acker racker@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== Actually, this is not about the ride, this is in response to Widget's "symptoms". I've had similar instances with 2 different horses. One, a 2-yo filly - I had taken her from the stall, groomed her and began longing in the roundpen. About 12 minutes into the work-out I noticed she was sweating pretty heavily and she was suddenly kind of lethargic. Checked her all over, could not find anything wrong, but she was obviously feeling bad. Called the vet to come out, thinking it was colic. About 3 minutes after I hung up with the vet, she defacated. Called the vet back, he said probably just a "gastric distress episode", watch her closely for another hour. She ended up totally fine. The other time was a 4-yo old gelding. We were on the trail with several others, about 15 minutes into the ride, and very suddenly, he did not want to continue and was sweating pretty heavily. I could not tell if was tying-up or colicking, or what. Got off and walked him back to the trailer. He didn't start moving freely again, until we were almost back to the trailer, which took us at least 1/2 an hour, maybe longer. Never knew what was wrong with him. In 30 years of horse keeping, I've had one case of colic, we're very careful to ensure our horses have adequate water, roughage, turn-out and excersize. So, it remains a mystery... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
