Re: [RC] Fw: [ECPhotos] If you are concerned about America's wild horses an... - DESERTRYDR1My big problem with the whole BLM mustang adoption program is the fact that they do not screen the adopters to determine if they have ANY horse experience. Our local paper ran an article the day before our adoption that pointed out that many adopters are first time horse owners. They are adopting mustangs because they are CHEAP! These people have very little idea what it takes to care for a horse, all they know is they need a little tiny pen to keep it in. They buy these totally wild fearful horses with a strong flight or fight instinct, they don't understand horse psychology, and the get hurt. Or someone else does. The death of a trainer here last Monday is still too fresh in my mind. An EXPERIENCED guy got killed by a mustang that was three days from the adoption center. He was working with three horses that some family had bought for their KIDS. I am totally against this program selling the horses so cheap that first time horse owners think they are the horse to get. Not saying that all first time horse owners are ignorant, just that there are too many who look at price first, don't realize the kind of care and training that even the most docile horse needs to become and STAY reliable for kids or inexperienced riders. I know I'll get flamed, I think they need to raise the adoption fee out of the "first time buyers'" range, or only adopt at low fees to experienced adopters. Maybe slaughter isn't the worst thing that can happen to a horse. jeri =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
