RE: [RC] QUESTION FOR SUSAN - Nancy Sturm

Disclaimer: I am not an expert on anything.

I have always liked having my horses out all day and in their stalls at
night, but I think if I owned your horse and was worried about his intake
of water, I'd just leave him out 24/7.

I just bought a horse that sort of frets in his stall. I've been feeding
him in the stall morning and evening, but I go up and release him after his
hay is pretty much cleaned up. Satisfies my need for routine and satisfies
his need to be outdoors.

Subject: [RC] QUESTION FOR SUSAN

Hi Susan,
I've got a 6 yr old quarter horse who just does not drink very well
most
of the time.
He loves getting most of his water from pasture grass......and obviously
drinks well in the pasture, as his manure looks greatl, -----but in the
stall drinks very poorly.

I've got a salt block in there and provide loose minerals. He is on a
diet
of pasture grass and Nutrena Safe Choice, with high quality bahia hay
when
he is stalled.

I'm afraid he'll get an impaction, as there are days when he doesn't
drink
a gallon of water in the 12 hours he is stalled, but eats all of his hay.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions. Someone suggested to me
to
add plain white loose salt to his food, but I hesitate to do this.

      Thanks,
      Charlene
