Did ya'll notice the news release that said most marathoners are dangerously overhydrated at the end of a race (or something to that affect). It was a matter of drinking too much water but not having enough electrolytes. It was literally life threatening. I still like the Kool-Aid analogy. If you've got a pitcher of Kool-Aid and then pour out half, adding just water will not give you the correct mix. I think the horses know that better than humans and won't just drink water because they "think" they should. Normally, I guess they'd eat grass, get electrolytes from it, then drink more water, but we have to help nature along a bit when we're in a hurry. I don't worry about giving Ben, our "never take a sip till 25 miles) horse a dose the morning of, then at the first and 2nd vet check. He always starts drinking immediately after that, and drinks *everywhere*. Actually, he's 23 this year and just this year he's decided to drink on the 2nd loop after about 16 miles.. Boy...about the time you've got'em like you like'm they get old. :-P Angie =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- =-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
