In addition to all the good advice given here,I'd like to add, sometimes a horse who leads well still balks at the first few ponying attempts. I like to ride the horse in a circle with the ponied horse. It's sometimes hard to move a horse straight ahead, but ask it to turn and it will go. You can make bigger and bigger circles until the horse gets it and then you can go straight.
