[RC] Why there are stud fees and not mare fees (was: super mare...etc.) - k s swigartIn answer to the original question of why mare owners have to pay stud fees and not the other way around....well....the costs of producing the foal are born by the person who gets to keep the foal, and usually this is the mare owner. In situations where it is the stallion owner who gets to keep the foal, the stallion owner either has to buy or lease the mare in order to do so, in which case it is the stallion owner who pays. It is not a matter of who owns the stallion, who owns the mare, or anything sexist associated with whatever one may want to imagine. It is a matter of who owns the foal. And yes, it is not unheard of for a stallion owner to pay a mare owner for the use of the mare so that the stallion owner can get a foal from her. And it is not unheard of for a stallion owner and a mare owner to come to an agreement where each gets one foal from two matings so that the mare owner doesn't have to pay a stud fee and the stallion owner doesn't have to pay to lease the mare. However, it is far more common for stallion owners to rent out the breeding services of their stallions than it is for mare owners to rent out the breeding services of their mares. But it is also possible for a person to own neither the stallion nor the mare, but to rent them both in order to get a foal, in which case both the mare owner and the stallion owner are paid a "rental fee." kat Orange County, Calif. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
