Re: [RC] re: stud fees - Becky Huffman

Yep. That's part of the fallout from the overbreeding of the 'hot' show
type, and the race type. Most of the older style horses are not so hot, or
if they are hot, they're not dangerous. -just very very happy on occasion.
I've raised my kids riding my broodmares and I wouldn't breed anything the
kids couldn't trail-ride or joust on. That's part of my performance
testing.

OK...here's "my" truth. I don't think that stud fees are out of line and
I'm happy to see that many breeders give discounts for mares who have
proven themselves in endurance. However, for someone like me, who has
very limited funds and limited physical facilities to raise a foal (I'd
prefer to see them grow up where they can run and play on 40+ acres and I
only have 5), it is just stupid to breed horses. I can pick up really
good horses from "free" to $1,500. These are horses ages 3 on up who are
generally just too hot for the people who have them. Often they are
already green broke and just need some training and lots of miles. I
can't raise a foal to rideable age for less than $5,000, probably more.
For me, it's just economics. I've been given two "free" horses that were
great. Please don't think I take just any old horse that needs a
home...I'm too old for that. Anyhow, as long as I can buy sound, straight
legged, grown Arabs for under $1,500 it is hard to give up being able to
afford endurance rides in order to breed my mare. My heart does go out to
you quality breeders who are trying to get a decent price for the horses
you raise. One thought is that if breeders wouldn't sell Arabs to people
who can barely ride, folks like me wouldn't end up with free horses!
