There are many genetic characteristics that help the success of an endurance horse that aren't as easy to see as the conformation basics. Some you can check, some you can't. Heart rate, recovery rate, excitability under pressure, trainability, appetite. As an all-breed trainer, I've seen some of the extremes and I know how difficult it is to judge a potential endurance horse with just a couple of visits, or a ride around their home turf. It can typically take years of training and vet and supplements to figure out that a horse isn't going to work. By shopping within successful families, you increase your odds that these things will be in your favor.
