RE: [RC] Terrain chaps-new - Mike Sofen

I train and compete wearing the same thing: trail running shoes (low, not
mid, no ankle support) and half chaps. The new Terrain half chaps work with
anything that isn't too big around, which is most anything you can wear and
still get your foot in the stirrup.

The thing that makes everything work for me: medium thick merino wool socks
(like from SmartWool) that are calf-high. I fold the socks down to become a
bit more than ankle high, and this creates a double thickness down at the
bottom of the half chap, lots of padding. In addition, even during the
hottest summer days (100+ degrees), my feet don't sweat, and on cold days
and rainy days, they stay warm.

The key to shoes is getting them BIG enough...enough room for a thickish
sock and lots of room for your toes. Go up a half size, you might be
surprised.

Mike and all,
Do you use the Terrains with Ariat boots? I was wondering if they'd

fit around tennis shoes okay or if they're only made to fit with Ariat
shoes (it says on Dover's site that the Ariat Terrain Half chaps are
"coordinates with both Endurance and Ultralight Endurance
collections").
Funny that we're talking about half chaps... I was just about to
mail
in an order for some cheap ($40) velcro, suede ones from Miller's, but
now I hear that they might be prone to slipping down. Might as well
look into it and purchase a higher quality pair that fit.

I already bought a pair.

Construction: mesh panels stitched to leather panels, with elastic,
using
the same shaped form that the regular Ariat chaps use. The mesh
panels do
NOT have leather on the inside, they are just mesh (a very sturdy
mesh).

Impression: they will be cooler than other chaps due to the large mesh
panels. Downside - those panels are on the outside of the leg, and in
blackberry country, unlike suede or leather chaps, the thorns will (and
have) snagged the mesh material, although they have not yet frayed or
torn.
They fit well, but come in fewer sizes than their regular chaps. And
they
are still priced Ariat style, at about $70. Now that the weather is
improving, I'll be riding in them again and will see how feel after a
longer
ride.
