I've ridden (lived, actually) in Montrail's Vitesse
trail running sneaker in warm weather for several years. They
have an internal "sling" that holds your foot in place and prevents toe
pressure and pain. Alas, the last time I tried to buy a pair they were
very difficult to find (I used to get them from REI).

We're all
different, aren't we? I wouldn't wear running shoes for two reasons. 1)
The soles aren't thick and rigid enough to protect my feet from toe pain
and pressure, and 2) the lugs on running shoes will hang up in the
stirrups the way I have to work at dismounting these days. But I know lots
of folks who swear by running shoes. They just don't work for
me.
