I friend of mine has a horse that has just been through so
much in the past few months. He had
a pretty steep club and had surgery to deal with that. He’s had the worst case of
scratches I’ve even seen (ok, wouldn’t take much, never seen it
before, but its nasty!).Then he
came up sore in the hocks, joint degeneration and just over a week ago had his
cunean tendons cut. It was amazing –
best he has ever moved.A couple
days after he was allowed back on pasture he comes up a little lame with a
popping noise.She removed the
bandages and found it was coming from around the fetlock and could see the
movement was very odd and he didn’t want to stand on it.
We just got back from visiting (and taking out stitches from
the surgery) and got to see it. This is very bizarre. It looks like P1-P2 is moving.Wouldn’t think a broken bone, just
that the normally very tight connection between these bones was destroyed.
We got to see Martha Olivio do the hoof/leg dissection at
the convention and this just seems very difficult. We’re thinking he might have
stumbled and ended up taking all his weight on the front of the hoof.
Any other ideas or anyone ever seen
anything like this? What kind of prognosis might this horse
have?
She was going to transport him to a hoof and leg specialist
on Monday, but I talked her into having a local vet start first to avoid traveling
until it was more clear what was going on.The specialist overnighted her a leg brace, but we were just too afraid that it would
not be the correct angle to force him into w/o knowing what really happened.
This poor lady, I haven’t even known her for a year
and she’s dealt with all of this on a neat little horse that she rescued
in exchange for a load of hay.
