RE: [RC] [AERCMembersForum] My Mare Heat! - katswig@xxxxxxxxxxxxxFrom: hope lundquist wwho20@xxxxxxxxxxx Now its Monday morning and my 35 year old mare is in HEAT! ... Do 35 year old mares grow Follicles??? It is not unheard of. Should I breed her? How badly do you want a foal from her? It is possible that she is not really in heat, in which case she won't really be receptive to being bred anyway. You could tease her more deliberately and find out. If she is in heat, it is possible that she hasn't produced a viable ovum. You could breed her and see if she settles. If she settles, she may not be able to carry the fetus to term. You could do a breeding soundess exam before breeding her to get a better idea, especially of the condition of her uterus is poor. However, if that is the case, you could make arrangements to do embryo transfer instead (so you can get a foal of hers without her having to actually carry it to term). But embryo transfer is expensive. So you need to ask yourself, just how badly do I want a foal from this mare? Personally, _I_ wouldn't be TOO concerned about the effect a pregnancy may have on shortening her life expectancy. She is already sufficiently old that her life expectancy is all that much. And while being pregnant and having a baby may make her miserable; it may also make her extremely happy for what little life she has left. She doesn't have much life left even if you don't breed her. kat Orange County, Calif. -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
