I'll answer this question from the other end of the
telescope: A somewhat cinical consumer of services.
I have no problem with anyone I hire wanting part
payment for a job. When I hired someone to put a roof on my shed, we
had no previous business relationship. I think it was quite
reasonable for him to want enough money to purchase the materials etc. On
the other hand I wouldn't want to pay him for the total job in advance, because
he might do a runner with my money.
If you agree to train a horse for a person, they
could not pay for any number of reasons, including outright fraud. At that
point you would have to go to small claims court, get a judgement, and find
something of their's to attach (Like the horse assuming they haven't spirited it
away in the night.) A downright mess at the minimum. The point about
the trainer having upfront expenses to finance is also very valid.
We had a mare bred and trained two years ago by
some friends. Part of the bill was paid upfront, part later. We both
knew and trusted each other the only consideration was what moneys the people
wanted when.
When I left WI I left one of my horses with a
different trainer to be sold. The arraingement was that she would deduct
her unspecified fee from the sale price. She had the blank signed papers
on the horse. We both had a history so we all could trust each
other. She eventually decided that she wanted the horse and has been
sending me monthly payments.
I guess my point is the financial arraingements can
vary greatly depending upon local custom and the prior relationship between the
two parties.
