RE: [RC] Graniteville train wreck. - Laurie Underwood

Ed, thanks for this post. I live not too far from the wreck. Our
training grounds are probably 5 miles away, as the crow flies. And I
wondered about the long-term affects of chlorine gas on the groundwater,
given that there are fish kills in nearby Horse Creek. If I understand
it correctly, chlorine gas reacts with water and becomes hydrochloric
acid, which is why it is toxic to all living things. I wondered if that
would affect our drinking water at Hitchcock Woods (training grounds).
Drinking water for the Town of Graniteville is piped in from another
source, so I didn't think they'd have any problems.

So far there are eight confirmed deaths and last time I checked, they
had not yet been able to get into the mills and surrounding homes to
check for casualties. The NTSB is investigating and they say the final
report will not come out for a year or so. It is unclear if the switch
was fault, if it was tampered with or if the crew of the parked train
failed to switch the rails back to the main line. Whatever happened, it
is horrible news.

Subject: [RC] Graniteville train wreck.

I just pulled up some newspaper articles on this accident.

First, the bad news. The chemical released was Chlorine gas. Chlorine
forms a pale yellow/green cloud. It huggs the ground and kills or
injures
all living things. That is the reason it was used as a war gas in WWI.
It
produces burns to the eyes, skin and lungs. If you survive the initial
effects you will have chemical pneumonia and possible long term scaring
to
the lungs.

Now for the good news. The chemical released was Chlorine gas.
Chlorine
quickly reacts with whatever is in the envirornment and becomes
harmless.
There will be no long term effects on the area.
