Your reaction is the reason I posted on this matter. First my credentials: I have a Phd in Physical Chemistry. I spent 34 years as an industrial chemist, often working with hazardous chemicals, including chlorine gas. 1. I never said that Chlorine gas is harmless. It kills. 2. I said that it quickly reacts and will have no LONG TERM effects. Being put out of a home for a week is a SHORT TERM effect. Some chemicals would contaminate the area and require long term evacuation and a very expensive cleanup effort. Remember that almost all of the city water supplies, swimming pools, and hot tubs in North America are treated with Chlorine as a disinfectant. The Clorox bleach that was recommended to kill the algae in a water tank is Sodium Hypo Chlorite, the reaction product of Chlorine gas and Sodium hydroxide. The moral: Do not panic when someone says there is a chemical spill. Some have short term effects, some have long term effects. Knowlege is power! Ed
