How about just pouring Clorox into some water in the drum, letting it set
for awhile (day or two?), removing it, washing it thoroughly and starting in
all over again.  Clorox usually kills algae just fine.

anyone have any suggestions as to how to keep algae out of 55 gallon drum

used for camping and drinking water for horses?  We haul this drum in the
back of our truck but now have to replace it because of algae.
