Re: [RC] [RC] moving up from CT to LD - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Nicole z_arabs@xxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== Those are interesting guide lines. I am wondering about the terrain issues. I train on very steep ground, lots of climb, and lots of down hill. We do 25 miles in about 4hrs, << Personally, I think you're more than ready to do a 50 if that's how you're conditioning. :) I have been afraid that I was going to fast, but recoveries have been great. The big problem that I have is when we get to a ride, they are so excited they want to run the whole time, and they do not relax into a moderate pace early on. What are some things that others have done to help teach pacing?<< Start 5, 10, 15 minutes after the pack. Even longer is OK, too. What I've done is I let the excited horse trot *very* slow at the start and ask for a walk every couple minutes. If the horse will do even a step or two of a flat-footed walk, I let her trot again. Using this method, they learn that if they walk they'll get rewarded with being allowed to move faster. My mare that started 50s in 2004 can walk away from camp with the pack on a loose rein now. She has her moments when she gets excited (like when horses pass us), but we just go back to that slow trot/walk method and she relaxes again. Personally, I don't feel you can really train this until you're at a ride since no other conditions replicate this situation. So, I consider *every* ride a training ride. :) ~Nicole =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
