RE: [RC] [RC] Mud and More Mud - Laurie Durgin

I live in Ga. I hae hilly and swampy areas. In winter I have mud--I fence off the 'grass pasture ' and won't let them on it or they quickly turn it too mud too. (hence i need more land). But they have about a 2 acre 'turnout' that is one big hill. The bottom 1/3 is 6-8" of mud. There are dry spots. I have added gravel around my barn where they can get out of the rain/mud at will. But I'd need about 4 truckloads of big rock to make a dry road to it. Can't afford it-and it would most likely get swallowed by the erosion from above. So they have to trapse thru 8 of mud to get to the barn (it is in a low spot). To really get rid of mud, youhave to have gravel a foot deep here. I have only a couple places I can get into with my tractor to set the round bales on raised spots.
Here is what I do. I check for thrush --if I have it either a 1-10bleachsolution I put in a spray bottle-- or "thrushbuster" which I like better, as it takes only only application usually.
Alternately I just spray from their pasterns down with the diluted bleach solution, occasionally. Or I might rub in the MTG solution if I am doing their manes. I also might hose theirlegs off and use betadine on them. I have found the generic "gold bond" powder keeps rainrot at bay too. If I have to blanket them or sheet them and maybe they are a bit damp or dirty i brush them and then sprinkle some under the sheet. Humidity here is often in the 80's and sometimes it rains, then turns cold, so I may have to blanket a damp horse, but I then put straw under the blanket or a polar cooler is they are really wet.
And is you can work in a bath, anytime with Vetrolin or betadine that can keep crud at bay.
Dont' use a rough brush on their legs , that can let bacteria in....

Rain and more rain. I started building an Ark but stopped because I would
only be able to take two horses. I won't let my horses out on pasture when
the ground is soggy because they would ruin what grass is available. I
keep them in corals and everything works out well except the more it rains
the deeper the mud gets. It looks like they are all standing in about a
foot of muck and water and it will seemingly take forever to dry out even
if the rain stops. I'll probably be doctoring for Thrush before it is all
over. I'd be interested in learning how others deal with muddy corals.
Logically, I would think mixing truck loads of gravel in with the soil
might help but I have no idea if the gravel would do more harm then good.
If you have had a similar problem and were able to fix it, I would
appreciate the benefit of your experience. Thanks, Bob
