Re: [RC] [RC] not scratches...it's ground sores ... - csimmons88

This is ground sores. Horses having hard, granular soil get abrasions on
the front of pasterns, hocks, point of hips and sometimes even elbows
(occassionally even developing hematomas on the elbows)..

We had high & dry areas under 30 horses overheads...10 x 15' (raised 1
foot;) in 40'corral runs; San Diego.. During the winter if we did not have
a light dressing of sand some horses would develop ground sores on the above
mentioned areas. It depended on their agility getting up & down to sleep &
roll.

I wonder if this is what the vets call "mud fever", from standing in the
mud
in the winter?

... are there other similar disorders that are NOT scratches?
My filly had areas on the FRONT of 3 out of 4 pasterns, just
above the coronet band, where the fur stands on end and there is
granulation on the skin. Does not look like other cases of
scratches I've seen (front instead of rear, no pain, not
cracking, no scabs, no hair loss). I treated it with a
concoction of Desinex, triple-action-antibiotic ointment and
zinc-oxide, but it did not respond. Since it is not causing her
pain, and it's not spreading, I've been ignoring it for now.
