Re: [RC] A good working trot? - Barbara McCraryI've had three horses, all good ones, who trotted fast (at least 13 mph). How I loved a good fast trot, so exhilarating, so exciting, so damaging! All three of these horses sustained suspensory ligament injuries caused by hyperextension during the fast trotting. I hate to think about it, but I never realized what was causing the problem until the third horse went lame, and then I began to search for a common denominator. I found it, all right. Now I consciously try to keep a horse from hyperextending. I'd think 8-10mph would be a more conservative way to think about it. or target a ride time, say an 6hr 50 = 8.2 mph (or a 5hr 50 being 10mph average..... seems like 14mph is pretty fast. johnt. ============================================================ You don't have to be a 100-mile rider or a multi-day rider to be an endurance rider, but if you want to experience the finest challenges our sport has to offer, you need to do both of those. ~ Joe Long ridecamp.net information: http://www.endurance.net/ridecamp/ ============================================================ ============================================================ ...but then, I do ride my horses a lot more than most people ~ Karen Chaton ridecamp.net information: http://www.endurance.net/ridecamp/ ============================================================
