Re: [RC] Horse colors - heidi

I had friend who is interested in breeding her palomino quarter horse to
my Desperado V son, ask if there is a possibility of getting a palomino
baby. He is a bay and carries a chestnut recessive gene. What are the
various color possibilities? Thanks for any input. June

The palomino (unless it is a really washed-out one) is likely heterozygous
for the dilution gene that causes palomino, so can pass it on 50% of the
time. She is also homozygous for the recessive gene for black pigment, ie
has no black pigment, or is "chestnut" with an added dilution.

The stallion is heterozygous for black pigment (Ee), so will pass on the
dominant gene 50% of the time and the recessive 50% of the time.

So--your chances are:

25% absence of black pigment plus dilution = palomino

25% absence of black pigment minus dilution = chestnut

25% presence of black pigment plus dilution = buckskin or dun (depending
on who you talk to and what they call buckskin or dun)

25% presence of black pigment minus dilution = bay

Hope that makes sense...

Heidi
