A friend of mine has started 2 of her mares at age 12-16, and they didn't have the early riding your new guy did. Both are still being ridden too, at 25 and maybe 23-24, though not competed much anymore. As long as he's brought along slowly and you watch for any signs of trouble, he may well enjoy the change in routine.
