RE: [RC] Softening/Conditioning Old Hard Leather--OT - Linda CowlesWhen I recondition saddles at my shop, I also soak them in warm water with Murphy's oil soap (it removes sealants like saddle soap and glycerin)!! Don't actually dip the saddle though - especially English - but get it as wet as you can and keep it wet until the saddle soaks up as much water as it can. When the leather has been thoroughly cleaned, hose and towel the saddle off then coat the damp leather on the top and bottom with liberal amount of a great conditioner by Leather Therapy. Be careful with the surface of the leather when it's this damp because scrubbing the surface roughly with a rag can take the grain-out shine off leather. The reason you soak the leather thoroughly is because dried out leather doesn't absorb oil well, but water evaporating out of wet leather will "wick" oils deep into the leather, resulting in a conditioning that can't be beat. I let Leather Therapy sit on the saddle overnight and apply more the next morning if it looks like it'll soak in, then towel the saddle and coat it - on all visible surfaces - with Leather New. These glycerin products seal the oils in. I've had "ruined" saddles that the owner thought were worth $100-$200 - saddles that I had to hose the mud and mold off of - turn out to be awesome saddles like Circle Y's, Stubben's, Passier's and rare collectable hand carved Porters that sell for $400-$1100 after a good cleaning. If the workmanship and leather are good, this will get them back into shape. Linda Cowles Horse 'N Hound New, Used & Consigned Tack & Stable Supplies 9155 N.
