[RC] Folks who don't use HRM's(Vicki A.) - EdLike Vicki's horse, mine too is "slow" going away from home. When we turn his nose toward home he suddenly wakes up and it gets difficult to get him to slow down for safety! Been doing it long enough now I have just considered it good training. Take our time going away (get the LSD part) and fly home. Seems to work well with my guy. My most recent training ride after about 12 miles ran into a group of riders heading for a local mountain top. Tagged along (the slow agonizing trail riding walk) and climbed straight up to the top which was about 3 more miles. Turned around and started heading down and Sawyer got hyped and would even do some bucking trying to come down the mountain. When we got to the road at the base of the mountain I excused myself from the group as we had a long ways to go to get home before dark. Sawyer turned it on and the slowest we went was his fast trot! We ended up doing about 28 miles that day. His anxiousness to get back home has been a great conditioning tool! Like Ed Hauser, I use the HRM at the vet check only. Has been quite helpful there to speed up our in/out times. I too am usually crewless (some would say clueless) and every little thing helps.
