Re: [RC] worming foal - sally reid

First worming:
I worm with safeguard 1x a month for the first 6 months. I don't give
anything else. Next worming is Pyrantel Pamoate, then wait 2 months, Next is
Ivermectin, then on the regular program with the others at aprox 1 year age.
never had a problem, been doing it for years. Don't forget the
vaccinations!
Scours:
Ignore foal heat scours, if that is what they are, and not coccidosis or
"high test milk" just rule those things out.
coccidiosis is sometimes leathal and always dangerous. It is easy to check
with a stool sample. but must be treated quickly and aggressivly. Thankfully
it is very rare in horses. Most common in "cross-over situations" where a
species that can affect more than one type of animal (i.e. goats, cows,
pigs) crosses over due to comingling of the different types of beasts.
High test milk means the mom is getting too much "good stuff" like alfalfa,
mare plus, ect. Common problem in Arabs. I just feed a good well-rounded
feed balanced to match my hay. Scours strike up again when all the green
grass comes in. Probios may help ease scours too. The foal heat scours are
temporary. Coat the babies butt with udder cream or vaseline to protect it.
Good luck.

Subject: [RC] worming foal

Ok, here's a slight twist on the worming question. Have
got several different answers locally from both breeders
and vets, just wondering what ya'lls take on it is....
When do you first worm a foal, with what (safeguard?) and
for how often and long until its ready to be on the regular
adult horses worming protocal?
Also what do you do for *foal heat* scours on baby..temp
is normal, is eating and bright eyed. Do you just keep an
eye on foal with a wait and see attitude or get agressive
with treatment and if this is the case what kind of
treatment?

Thanks in advance,
Penny
