Re: [RC] Blevins buckle replacement? Help! - Dot WigginsYou might take the saddle to a local saddle shop, have the blevins buckles taken off and the leathers restiched. Use latigo leather laces, they should have them, don't need to be rawhide. Old timers used that to be sure someone DIDN'T change their stirrups. Most western leathers are punched too far apart for good adjustment, the shop should be able to add more holes neater than you can. This can be very smooth and fit your legs well. If there isn't enough twist in the fenders to "set" the stirrups, put the saddle on a stand, thoroughly wet the lower parts with sponges/towels, put a broom stick through the stirrups with an extra half twist and weight it down. After it's dry it will stay put as long as you ride it often. A little leather dressing would be good too. ----- Original Message ----- From: "cheval" <cheval@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, February 12, 2004 8:39 PM Subject: [RC] Blevins buckle replacement? Help! I have picked up so many useful pieces of information from Ridecamp posters, so I am hoping that someone may have a suggestion for my current (small but painful) dilemma. The good news is that my western style endurance saddle fits my table-top arab mare like a glove. The bad news that the metal blevins (sp?) buckles that adjust the fender length are killing the fronts of my shins. After long rides I end up with huge bruises on my legs from the buckles pressure through the fender leather. I have tried wrapping sheepskin around the fenders, and have even resorted to duct taping extra large sanitary napkins to the insides of my half chaps; but to no avail. I know it is not my riding position... (having been critiqued by several of my riding instructors.) Does anyone know of something to substitute for the metal sliding blevins buckles that will still make it relatively easy to adjust stirrups??? I know that the older western saddles were laced together semi-permenantly with rawhide but sometimes other people ride in my saddle. I'd really appreciate any advise. Thanks so much! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
