Personally, I think it is fine to also change a
name.....especially if the horse comes from a poor background; so not to
associate the former bad life with you.... then again, sometimes you buy horses
with names you cannot stomach....
Over the years friends and I bought:
Domminno's Easter Lily....yuck, this horse did not
have a "Lily" personality....came from Shasta area, so named Shasta, really fit,
as she was brown with roaning (like a mountain with snow).
Saabrina Love......became
Breeze.......
Too Short became Cayenne (red roan hot
Arab/appy)
Shorty became Shilo
REd mare became Cinnabar...
Kwincy became Chancy, became Nasty Chancy, became
"Nasto"
Some names and nicknames have a life of their
own! Then again, no matter how I disliked having a horse named Ashley, we
never found anything else....
I agree with the importance of
names and naming. this year I will have 4 to name. 1 Arab, one TB, and 2
Connemaras. The right name will come.. and trust it too. I accidently named an
Arab filly seconds after birth "widget" because she was a wiggle worm. Her
papers say "Jewel's Image" but her name is Widget. I sold her and her new
owner calls her Widget too.
Also, the wrong name seems to
affect the horse too: I bought a mare named Sweet Tater Fly. She hated being
called "sweetie" One day "Veronica" came out of my mouth..... she has been
much happier since the name change. she seems to like being called
"Ronnie"
