RE: [RC] [RC] [RC] Deworming/Quest - Kelly Lane - sharon1359I would have to say no, your worming program isn't going to cover everything. Again, I'm not a vet, but... Moxidectin is not said to be effective against Encysted Early 3rd Stage Small Strongyles, Roundworms, and Lungworms. According to several sources I found, Small Strongyles are considered to be the most commonly found worm in horses... and 75% of them at any given time are in the Encysted Early 3rd (EL3) Stage which can last up to 3 years. And Moxidectin is only effective against L4, L5, and MAYBE Late L3 Small Strongyles depending on who you ask. See http://www.valleyvet.com/Library/24299panacur.pdf for more information... yes, it is marketing material for Panacur, but I was able to verify it elsewhere. So for your EL3s you'd need the 5-day double-dose Panacur or SafeGuard treatment (timing depends on where you live), for Roundworms you'll need a dose of Oxibendazole (Anthelcide EQ is one type) at some point during the year, and for Lungworms you'll need a dose of Ivermectin at some point during the year. If anyone else knows differently, of course, PLEASE speak up. :) -Sharon K. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
