RE: [RC] [RC] Deworming/Quest - Kelly Lane


Hello all-
I've decided to go Quest the whole way after guidance from my vet. I'm starting to rotate Quest and Quest Plus 4x year. Both my horses have had two doses since last fall without adverse effects. Of course, I am always looking for more input. Does this program really take care of all that it needs to?

I just did a ton of research on current deworming information, so that I could
get my new rotation in order. My information is from product labels and
veterinary websites. But, if there are any vets or other folks out there who
have come up with different info, please feel free to let me know (sources for
your info would also help, so I can figure out where I went wrong).

But you may want to think about rotating your Ivermectin/Praziquantel (EquiMax
or Zim. Gold) with other drugs as well. Not necessarily because of the worms
becoming resistant over time, but because even though that drug combination
does get a very wide spectrum of worms, it STILL misses some. Below is a
summary I wrote up for a friend:

Regarding drug types and effectiveness:

The drug class BENZIMIZADOLE includes two sub-types, OXIBENDAZOLE ("Anthelcide
EQ") and FENBENDAZOLE (Panacur and SafeGuard). Of those two sub-types, the
Fenbendazole is effective against far more types of worms. HOWEVER, each group
has some worms where it is the ONLY drug that will kill it. Oxibendazole is
the only one that I found that will kill Large Roundworms, and Fenbendazole is
the only one that I found that will kill Encysted 3rd-Stage Small Strongyles
(also called just Encysted Strongyles sometimes)... and you have to give a
double dose over 5 days for it to be effective for that.

IVERMECTIN (Zimectrin, Equimectrin, etc.) will kill several types that aren't
killed by the Benzimizadole drugs... these types include Hairworms, Lungworms,
Large Mouth Stomach Worms, and Bots.

PRAZIQUANTEL, which is found mixed with either Moxidectin (QuestPlus AKA
ComboCare) or Ivermectin (Zimectrin Gold and EquiMax), is the only drug that
kills tapeworms.

When comparing the effectiveness of different drugs against different types of
worms, I did not include Moxidectin because my barnlord won't let us use it
anyway. The information is below, though, in case someone wants it.

MOXIDECTIN (Quest) is effective against: Large Strongyles, Small Strongyles,
Encysted Small Strongyles in the Late L3 and L4 stages, Ascarids, Pin Worms,
Hair Worms, Large-mouth Stomach Worms, Horse Stomach Bots, and Neck
Threadworms. It is not effective against Tapeworms, and does not seem to be
effective against Encysted Early 3rd Stage Small Strongyles, Roundworms, and
Lungworms. I was unable to find any evidence of its reputed toxicity, although
I did find several studies where it was proven NOT to be toxic even with doses
of 5-6x the recommended levels. The horses did get sick, but they recovered
with no permanent effects.

the chart was put together by the makers of SafeGuard and Panacur. ;)
