Re: [RC] Understanding Mares/ Horse deaths - heidiHas anyone tested this hypothesis? No, but it is a good one. Biggest problem I can see in testing it is that one needs to have several years' stats in order to have a large enough number of horse deaths to give a meaningful figure. (And don't forget that it likewise needs to be adjusted for the numbers of each gender actually starting.) PS. I have owned and ridden both mares and geldings. I personally prefer geldings, mostly because I have never had a gelding miss a year of competition because of pregnancy. Of course, that is a personal choice (referring to whether the mares miss a year due to pregnancy or not). But it is a tough one--I feel strongly that mares are (IMO) the most overlooked endurance resource out there, but as a breeder, I also feel that the ones that DO possess the traits to be really good at it are also the ones I need to breed to have a good breeding program. <sigh> Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
