Yes, mud fever/scratches are the same thing.:-) :-) And who has mud in the
winter???????You just put that in to make us "Northern" people jealous
didn't you???We have at least 4 feet of snow with more on the way tonight-
can't really remember what mud looks like:-) ;-)

My filly had areas on the FRONT of 3 out of 4 pasterns, just above the coronet band, where the fur stands on end and there is granulation on the skin. Does not look like other cases of scratches I've seen (front instead of rear, no pain, not cracking, no scabs, no hair loss). I treated it with a concoction of Desinex, triple-action-antibiotic ointment and zinc-oxide, but it did not respond.
