[RC] The mysteries of Protein bars - Lysane CreeI like protein bars (and trail mix bars or granola bars) because they are easy to carry, easy to eat on the go and most have a number of added vitamins and minerals. Plus I tend to eat a lot of carbs (good carbs) and neglect proteins when I am riding or at a show ,etc. I also like keeping some handy at work for busy days when there is no time to take a lunch hour or I have missed breakfast. So, my question is about how I can distinguish between the zillion bars that I have seen at Loblaws and health food stores. Some are "meal replacement bars" such as the ones by Jamieson called Slim Down and the ones made by Slim-Fast. There are lots of different added vitamins and minerals in these. The Slim Fast bars are not bad. But these other "Slim-Down" bars are supposed to be high in fibre (7 grams) but they also contain 6 g of fat, 2 g of saturated fat and 11 mg of cholesterol and 12 g of sugar!!! They also advertise "patented phaseolamin carb and calorie blocker" Huh? The ingredient listing then adds that phaseolamin is also known as dried bean extract. Then there are The Zone protein bars, Meso-Tech, Genisoy, Detour (pricy!), Balance, Clif, Power Bar and dozens of others. Is protein just protein or are some better than others....? Any ideas on selecting a good protein bar? That won't kill me with fat and sugar. Or suggestions of ones to try?
