Re: [RC] Scratches Information And An Old-Time Remedy - Long - Truman Prevatt

A good friend is a pharmacologist at a FL medical school. She did some reserach on scratches and found out it is caused by an organism that is normally found on the skin. It becomes a problem when the skin is broken and irritrated such as pink skin getting sunburned, from alkaline soils, insect bites (e.g. chiggers), etc. The organism is somewhere along the line between a fungus and a bacteria. The same organism causes a lot of the skin conditions, rain rot, etc. These organisms do not live well in an acidic environment. The remendy she used was vinegar (acetic acid) to kill the beggers and oil (vegetable oil) to soothe the skin. Her horses smelled like a salad but it seem to work well. This would be the same principle as the sauerkraut remedy.

Such things a Teatree oil are also acidic so that could be one reason it seems to work on skin problems. I've used the fungicide captain (made or ortho for roses) to treat them also and that works quite well.

I think this to be a pretty handy book to have around. It's $19.95 new on amazon, but is available in the new/used section for $12.25:

Here's a remedy that I've used that worked. It's out of "How To Be Your Own
Veterinarian (Sometimes)" by Ruth B. James, DVM. See the sauerkraut remedy
at the bottom of the information. It's smelly and messy but I left it on for
the prescribed amount of time and when I removed it - the scratches were
just about gone, just as described.

Hope it helps!
