RE: [RC] Scratches - heidi sowardsMy retired gelding got this, only at rides in sandy conditions though. (Or in ash from Mt. St. Helen's.) He doesn't really have any pasture to speak of anyway. I would use athlete's foot medication for prevention, at AERC rides I'd use desitin during the ride and immediately after vetting in use the athlete's foot med. with desitin over the top. Worked for us. heidi --- Wendy Harris <wendyh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: Excellent Question -- I too would love to know if there is any preventative measure to avoid this nasty stuff. I have to chuckle because most of what I've read indicates dirty stalls, wet pastures etc. Last year in August my pasture definitely was not wet - if anything it looked burnt to a crisp. The horse was brought in every night to a dry-clean stall and he still got it. Is it possible that it's contagious? This particular horse is 8 yrs. old and never had it until last year. He was at a trainer's facility for a month (June) and then brought home. Did not have scratches from what I could see - in August he developed it. Seems to be helping but would like a faster = cure for this nasty stuff. I have tried Micro Tek and Destin before and it = does not seem to help any better. Help! All of my riding horses have been prone to scratches unfortunately , probably because they are kept in an irrigated pasture that also contains clover :-) Every one of my horses responds differently , what works like a miracle on one won't begin to heal the other . One horse Trail Rites magical cream worked great , another was a 50/50 solution of penicillin and DMSO , my current horse Micro Tek is the cure . All I know for sure are that they are a huge pain to treat no matter what . What I would like to hear from you guys is what do you put on your horse at a ride or at home to prevent getting them ? It seems like destin would tend to keep the dirt and sand on the area instead of protecting it or am I wrong about that ? Drin Becker Mtn Region --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free.
