Re: [RC] Anyone looking for a water tank? ALSO: How much water to bring? - Jim HollandI have 3/4 Dodge with a Cummins Diesel, tow package, and RV package. I have a 100 gallon tank in the bed and I pull a 2 horse slant load aluminum. I can't tell it's back there when full....but it does knock down my gas mileage a bit. (I feel it more when it's HALF full) It's not tied down...just sitting on a rubber bed mat up against the front of the bed....and it has never offered to move. However, remember the greatest chance of it moving is when you STOP, not accelerate. I definitely would not even CONSIDER it with a 1/2 ton truck. If you have a heavy steel living quarters trailer, suggest you visit a truck stop with a weigh station and check it out before buying a big tank. An alternative is to carry just enough water in the tank to get you to your destination. Stop and fill up at a truck stop when you get close to Ridecamp. I installed one of the 25 gallon "corner tanks" in my trailer for travel. That way I don't need the big tank except for camping and crewing when I get there. If you put it in the bed of your pickup, and you have a 1/2 ton truck, your available carrying capacity (like your trailer) is ZERO. With a one ton truck, you'll still have 1,000 pounds of carrying capacity, but if you have a heavy trailer, you'll be way over limit. Basically, the only way to carry that much water is to place it in one of your horse stalls so that the trailer carries the weight. The other thing - that much water has a tremendous capacity to move. You will need significant and strong materials to ensure that it stays where you want it.
