Re: [RC] Fence Cutting and Losing Access to Trails -- Laurie Underwood - sally reidI'll tell you what might help solve the problem - make it a club. Dues could be very little - maybe $10. The woods are a public park.... the owner can only charge to park on the southside, near the former Prep School Stables. I was raised in Aiken, rode there all my life. As I child I grew up playing in Hitchcock Woods with my pony, then later a series of horses. The woods are a "park" created by a perpetual trust started by Tommy Hitchcock and J. C. Whitney over 100 years ago. They wanted a place to exercise the polo ponies, play at hunting with the children and generally enjoy the "sporting life" that is all but vanished from Aiken. My mother still lives in a cottage that was formerly on the Hitchcock estate. I have sadly watched the selling of the woods (Aiken Prep school sold the land that became Houndslake) the cutting of the bypass (cutting out one of my favorite places to ride) and the general trashing of the woods. It is sad to think that because of a few careless fools, the once 5000 acre woods has dwindled to a few heavlily used acres. It is not only yahoos who ruin woods.
