RE: [RC] [RC] Camping in the rain/ sheets sale - Laurie Durgin

I just bought another rainsheet from Jeffers--online--closeout on the Weatherbeeta--1280 denier Plaid sheet--probably cause the plaid is so ugly. For 77.00 + shipping , only took a week.

>>>I have a heavy blanket but it is not rain proof as she normally is in the
barn. Should I go and buy a rain sheet or just keep in her the trailer?<<<

I have done both. If it is a bad storm, pouring, heavy rain, I have loaded
them in the trailer until the storm passes. Mine stand nice and quiet in the
trailer, but not all horses will. Many will paw and fuss if not used to it,
and keep you awake. A good rain sheet is a wise investment, to have in your
trailer all the time. I don't like any that are less than 1200 denier.
Weatherbeeta makes a nice sheet, for about $90 that is a 1200 denier. They
hold up well, and will keep the horse dry. If cold, you can put it on over a
warmer blanket, or blanket liner. If you are on a budget, you can go buy a
plastic shower curtain. Then take some of those large black clips, that hold
stacks of paper together, and put the shower curtain over the horses
blanket, and clip it on all around, on to the blanket at the edges, so it
won't blow off. The horse will stay dry. BUT, remove if it warms up, as they
do not breathe, and the horse can get hot under it quickly. I also have held
on a shower curtain rain sheet, by placing over the horses blanket, then
putting a very light weight fly sheet, over the shower curtain. No clips
needed, and the sheet kept the shower curtain in place. The fly sheet gets
wet, but who cares, as long as the horse stays dry. BUT, practice putting a
big piece of plastic, or shower curtain on the horse before the ride. Some
think it is a monster, and won't let you near them. We have tied to the
trailer for years, and if the horse has plenty of food, and is kept as
comfortable as possible, they do fine. While mine get wet at home, they can
move more at home. I also like to keep them dry with a sheet, as it also
keeps the mud off them, if they lay down in the middle of the night. Mud
starting off under tack, is asking for a rub or sore.
