Re: [RC] abcesses that take a long time to heal. - heidiYes, the epsom salts definitely draw. And as the vets, including Heidi have said, they also dry. So I have been using a clay that draws but does not dry, at least I hope, not as much as the Epsom salts. Actually, clay is one of the most drying sorts of poultices I've ever worked with. And as a personal example--my own hands are never in such bad shape as they are when I work in the irrigation ditch in areas where we have clay sealants to keep the ditch from leaking. I bought it at the health food store. I asked the vet about it beforehand and she said it was a great idea. It is a great idea because it draws--not because it doesn't dry the hoof. Obviously, this is a big abcess. In fact the three vets who have now examined Sunny all said they thought the probelm probably included more than just one abcess. Many abcesses involve multiple tissue layers and can be pocketed. Unfortunately such a scenario is not uncommon. The other paradigm goes like this: * Abcesses can be caused by any of the above -- or, as might be Sunny's case -- caused by the damage of shoes. The hoofcare specialists I rely upon -- and who total more than 30 years in their experience with horses' feet -- traditionally find that when they remove the shoes, it takes about 4-5 months for the damage of the hoofs to make itself fully seen/felt. <snip> That seems to be where Sunny, given his past history of bad shoeing, is at. Wen his shoes were removed 4 months ago his heels were so underslung that the heelpoints reached the midpoint of his frogs. I would amend your second paradigm (above) to read that abcesses can be caused by BAD shoeing. The way you say it, it implies that ANY shoeing causes such trauma. That simply isn't true. And by your own admission in the paragraph after that, Sonny had BAD shoeing. If shoes are not properly applied to a hoof that has first been properly trimmed, then they can cause pain and trauma--just like when you try to wear shoes that do not fit properly, vs the comfort of shoes that DO fit properly.
