Re: [RC] re: at last -- relief from abcess - heidiYou defintely have a point! The thing is, I don't believe I'm dealing with just the abcess anymore. I should have been clearer about that in my post. I believe I'm dealing with the pain from the holes the vet dug into Sunny's hoof. When they went to drain the abcess, they dug pretty deep, into the corium and everything. So he's exposed and it's painful for him. So he has that, and an abcess. The abcess, judging from the x-rays, is pretty big. I'm not sure if we're over that completely or not. To add to what Jonni said, though, there comes a day when there is a layer of tissue grown back over the sensitive corium, etc., and then that ceases to be painful as well. If he is not "over" the abcess, then some sort of soaking is in order. Although I know your hoof care specialist is "down" on Epsom salts because they dry the hoof, one reason why they work so well in clearing up abcesses is because they osmotically draw the fluid out of the abcessed area as well, and kill bacteria by that same drying effect. It is quite easy to control the drying to the hoof itself with a good hoof dressing. Using Epsom salt soaks, I've rarely had abcesses remain painful for as long as you report this one has, even when there are BIG holes dug in the sole and exposing the corium, etc. Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
