[RC] Hay in the NE - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Diane Nelson nelsonde@xxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== I've been reading with interest the "hay stories", particularly the CA variety. Here in Eastern PA, hay is often hard to come by. Generally the farmers do not grow grass hay as it has a one-time harvest. We consider ourselves fortunate to get an alfalfa mixed with orchard or timothy. Pure timothy is generally stemmy and on the edge of being palatable. Round bales are a stoarage nightmare so square's the way to go, in the 35-55 lb category (tossers). It took us three years to convince the farmer up the road to sell us hay. He's PA German and we had to "earn" the right to buy hay by being persistent and paying immediately upon receipt. Now Farmer Bob "keeps us in mind" to the point where we have first choice at out-of-field harvests. Farmer Bob brings his hefty brothers, a hay elevator and 3-4 wagons of the good stuff. The neighbor boy and my son help stack (400-500 bale capacity in the barn) but I have the hardest job of all. I have to count...and write the check. Once the current crop of farmers has passed on, it will be really difficult to find hay in an increasingly suburban area.
