RE: [RC] [RC] cold weather - Laurie DurginWell you could do the sacrificial thing, if you really love your horse and put the bit inside your shirt while brushing himoff ;)Body temps around 99-101 depends on time of day and the horse. Horses are made for colder climates, as long as they have hay, they can keep warm.(the didgestion of the hay keeps their body temp up. Unless it is cold and wet.(like here in SE, we get sudden cold and rain and re more likely to blanket thant some northerners, cause it's 60-70"s, then sudenly a front comes in, it rains ,drops to 30's to 40's, then goes into 20's all in 24 hrs. If they have shelter available, they can go in and out in , that is good. Rest sort of depends on how much winter coat they have.I have one horse who never grows hardly anything. And 2 woolly mamoths, and one in between. So I actually have to clip one that I ride in winter as he gets too hot and sweaty and muddy in winter. I tend to blanket at night in the 30's and let them roam in and out of the barn, and they always have hay. And I sheet or blanket when it is 40's and rain.
